On a mission to ensure every child in Seattle Public Schools is prepared for success in college, career and life.

Student gains are our most important success metric.  Other results of our recent work include:

Advocacy: Led the Our Schools Coalition, a diverse group of 35 citywide organizations and civic leaders, in a successful advocacy campaign to overhaul the collective bargaining agreement between Seattle Public Schools and its teachers’ union, redefining how teachers in Seattle are supported, compensated and evaluated.

Led a successful campaign to enroll 100% of eligible 7th and 8th graders in Washington State’s College Bound Scholars program.  In years prior to 2011, enrollment ranged from 0% to 95% within individual schools.

Assessment: Funded the district-wide implementation of Measures of Academic Progress (MAP), a comprehensive assessment tool that measures student progress three times over the course of the academic year and provides teachers with useful data to adapt instructional practice to meet student need.

Curriculum: Funded the expansion of Readers & Writers Workshop into 50 elementary and K-8 schools, increasing the number of students in Pre-K through 8th grade who meet or exceed proficiency standards in reading and writing.

Fundraising: Since 1995, the Alliance has raised a total of $126M of cash contributions and $5M of in-kind contributions for a total of $131 from thousands of generous individuals, local employers and institutions in Seattle in support of our public schools.

Harnessed the generosity of more than 46,520 individuals, local employers and institutions in Seattle in support of our public schools.

Governance: Conducted a comprehensive policy audit comparing school district policies with Washington State law, leading to the elimination of gaps, redundancies and inconsistencies in current policy.

School Services: Managed more than 6,000 transactions totaling $2 million in 2010 in service to the financial and accounting needs of over 200 PTAs, booster clubs and school foundations.

Developed and launched the city’s first-ever Student Services Directory, giving families, teachers, counselors and administrators immediate access to the catalog of approximately 300 community-based organizations that provide programs and services throughout Seattle’s 94 schools.

Technology: Oversaw a multi-million dollar investment in information technology and data systems to generate annual school report cards beginning in 2010, dramatically improving district transparency and accountability.
