Right Now Needs Fund

An innovative new fund created in partnership with Amazon, the Right Now Needs Fund is designed to give school communities enhanced capacity to meet the urgent and basic needs of students in Seattle Public Schools. Each school in Seattle Public Schools will have access to funds designed to remove the most basic barriers to student learning. The Right Now Needs Fund will provide support in the 2018 – 2019 and 2019 – 2020 school years.

Created with a $2M grant from Amazon, the Right Now Needs Fund will be stewarded by the Alliance for Education. The fund is designed to directly benefit students, and will not support currently budgeted items for schools.

Who will the Right Now Needs Fund benefit?

The Right Now Needs Fund is designed to directly benefit students, and particularly any student impacted by poverty in such a way that it is inhibiting their learning.

What can the funds be spent on?

The funds can be spent on addressing the basic needs of students. Examples of appropriate expenditures would include warm clothing, adequate food, or necessary school supplies. Funds cannot be spent on existing school budget expenses.

When will the Right Now Needs funds become available?

The Alliance for Education is working to make sure funds are available as soon as possible – we are currently partnering with Seattle Public Schools and Amazon to establish systems and protocols for the fund. Funds will be available for the 2018 – 2019 school year, as well as the 2019 – 2020 school year. As soon as the fund is up and running, we will work with Seattle Public Schools to let school communities know more. Stay tuned for updates!

What is the Alliance’s role?

The Alliance for Education works closely with the district as a partner and supporter, and shares the district’s commitment to closing opportunity gaps. For over 20 years, the Alliance has offered support to school and community groups raising funds on behalf of schools. As a result, the necessary infrastructure and expertise to manage a gift of this scale is already in place at the Alliance. We are adept at managing multiple school accounts, customer relationships, processing check requests, and delivering timely reports to customers. Our staff has the capacity to provide a consistent level of accountability and expertise to each school with a fund of this scale and purpose.
