Yonas Fikak brings over a decade of experience in the field of education with him to the Alliance for Education. His journey began as an AmeriCorps Member with City Year. He then joined Success Academy in New York City where he spent two years teaching in the classroom. Afterward, Yonas took on the role of Program Manager at City Year for three years. His passion for education has led him to hold various leadership positions in charter schools and nonprofits.

Throughout his career, Yonas has found great inspiration in serving students who benefit from his support, not only as an educator invested in their learning, but also as a mentor. He takes pride in his ability to show up for students and has always considered it a privilege. Additionally, Yonas is dedicated to fostering the courage needed to dismantle racist systems and continually deepening his understanding of building antiracist systems.

As the first member of his family to graduate from a four-year college, Yonas’ journey to success began when he immigrated from Eritrea to the U.S. at the age of 16. When he’s not working, Yonas enjoys engaging in various activities such as playing soccer and basketball, listening to music and NPR, spending time with his son, wife, and friends, writing poetry, and reading nonfiction.

Yonas holds a B.A. in Politics from Whitman College and an MA in Education from Touro College.
