The Seattle Teacher Residency gave Matt a community of educators to rely on for new ideas and support, empowering him to develop his classroom culture like a caring family and make it a student-centered space.

At Roxhill Elementary in West Seattle, third-grade teacher Matt McDonald is cultivating a welcoming and student-centered learning environment.
Growing up in a small coastal Washington town and not having a traditional background in education, Matt found the Seattle Teacher Residency (STR) program instrumental in helping him develop his perspective as an educator, providing him with mentorship and support from experienced teachers.
The STR program helped Matt to experiment with creative teaching methods and prioritize student voice.
“What is your positionality and just taking those few minutes at the end of every day to really step back, look outside of the room a little bit, look from the top down and see, you know, what am I doing? ” Matt pondered during his time in the program. These questions continue to shape his approach to teaching.
Matt also values the strong community of educators he’s built through the program.
“Teaching can be tough, and it takes a lot out of you,” he notes. “Having that network of colleagues who went through similar experiences has been a lifeline. We share ideas, resources and support each other, which makes a huge difference.”
In his classroom, Matt strives to foster a sense of belonging that extends beyond the academic year.
“The last talk I have with my students at the end of the year is that my door is always open,” he says. “There’s nothing they can do that will change the fact that they are part of this classroom family.”
Matt is committed to making learning enjoyable.
“There’s a misconception that school has to be all about strict schedules and academics, but we find ways to break down those barriers and enjoy our time together. Learning can be challenging, but it can also be joyful,” he says.
Through his dedication to fostering an inclusive and joyful environment, Mr. McDonald is ensuring that every student at Roxhill Elementary feels valued, supported and part of a lasting community.
“It’s all about building trust and ensuring that the classroom is a safe space for everyone.”
The Seattle Teacher Residency has been a crucial part of his journey, equipping him with the tools and support needed to create such an impactful classroom.
