what we do
The Alliance for Education is on a mission to ensure every child in Seattle Public Schools is prepared for success in college, career and life. Since inception in 1995, the Alliance has worked to cultivate the practice of charitable giving to education causes in Seattle and to build public support for education as a matter of social justice and economic prosperity.
We are the District’s “critical friend,” pushing and challenging Seattle Public Schools to be the best it can be. In pursuit of our mission, we focus on three domains:
The Alliance raises money to support public education in Seattle. Since 1995, the Alliance has raised a total of $126 million in cash contributions and $5 million of in-kind contributions for a total of $131 million from thousands of generous individuals, local employers and institutions in Seattle in support of our public schools. We direct these funds into scalable, sustainable investments that benefit students in every corner of our city. Visit our Investments page to learn more.
The Alliance advocates for sound education policies that accelerate student achievement and support high quality teachers and leaders within the system. We focus primarily at the local level but engage in state policy discussions as necessary.
Some of the most recent projects the Alliance has been involved in are 2010-2013 CBA, Our Schools Coalition, and our Public Policy Issues. To learn more about our advocacy projects, visit our Advocacy page.
The Alliance has a strong heritage as a convener of community leadership. We are committed to nurturing inclusive, actionable civic engagement that brings together parents, educators, business leaders, researchers, policy makers, direct service providers and other stakeholders around education issues. To learn more about our convening groups, visit Philanthropic Partnership for Public Education (PPPE), Our Schools Coalition (OSC), and Seattle College Access Network (SCAN).
School Fiscal Services: The Alliance provides direct fiscal services to more than 200 PTAs, booster clubs and school foundations. These services, which we provide at no cost to schools, offer stability and accountability to groups with an ever-changing volunteer management structure. For more information, please visit our School Fiscal Services page.
Scholarships and Awards: The Alliance also administers awards & scholarships to acknowledge excellence among educators and students. To learn more, visit the Awards & Scholarships page.

“We need everyone who cares about public education to take on the toughest assignment of all—and get in the business of turning around our lowest-performing schools: that includes states, districts, nonprofits, unions and charter organizations.”
Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan
