School Leadership
News headlines this past week have focused on who will be the next superintendent of Seattle Public Schools and the School Board's ability to lead the district. Alliance for Education expressed views on these important matters in the November 6 Seattle P-I.

The Alliance extends a heartfelt thanks to the 470
people who supported our work with Seattle Public Schools through the Alliance
Fourth Annual Leadership Breakfast for Kids. The
event, which celebrated the work of two Nobel laureates (and Roosevelt High School grads), raised more than $220,000. A special thanks goes to the sponsors and table
captains who helped make the event a success.

You're invited to attend the second in a series of
community discussions co-sponsored by the Alliance about the teaching and
learning of mathematics. "Will Our Children Know
Their Basic Facts? Teaching Multiplication for
Understanding" will take place Thursday, November
9, from 6:45 pm to 8:30 pm at Mercer Middle School.
This hands-on workshop, led by math expert Dr. Ruth
Parker, is geared towards parents and educators.
Community members who joined the first discussion with Dr. Parker on October 16th got a firsthand taste of "new math." During the discussion, Dr. Parker asked the more than 500 person audience to solve several addition and subtraction problems. As people volunteered answers, it became clear to the audience that there are many ways to solve even basic problems-and some of those ways provide better preparation for algebra than the traditional methods of standard arithmetic. A common response from parents in the event follow-up survey was, "If Only I'd Learned Math That Way!" Please join Alliance for Education and our co-sponsors, MESA, Seattle Council PTSA, University of Washington College of Education, and Seattle Public Schools, for the next community math night, this time focused on the instruction of multiplication. This is an interactive, hands-on event where adults will solve real math problems. For more information, please contact Tracy Woodman. Washington Learns Forum
Washington Learns recommendations are almost here!
The Alliance invites you to join us on November
14 at a forum where speakers
will talk about the recommendations of this high level group appointed by Governor Christine Gregoire, the significance of the recommendations for Seattle Public Schools, and the chances that the recommendations will prompt real change. The forum
takes place from 7:30 am to 9:00 am at the Seattle
Public Library Downtown Branch.

More than 300 West Seattle High School students
participated in the Environmental Portal Fair held
November 1, made possible through the support of the Alliance. At the fair, students connected with
environmental organizations, such as the Seattle Aquarium and EarthCorps, that provide service learning opportunities and internships. The fair was
organized by a team of student leaders composed of
sophomores and juniors.
A broadcast journalism class from West Seattle High School filmed the fair and is producing an Environmental Portal DVD for students to view who were not able to attend. With the support of grants from The Paul G. Allen Family Foundation and the Russell Family Foundation, the Alliance helps connect Seattle Public Schools students and teachers with environment-focused businesses and organizations through events like the Portal Fair. The next Environmental Portal Fair is December 5 at Chief Sealth High School. For more information, please contact Cary Melton. Alliance for Education is an independent nonprofit
organization that advocates for policies and
mobilizes resources that advance academic
achievement for all students in Seattle Public
Schools. Visit us on the Web at www.alliance4ed.org.
