The Web site is a great resource for keeping

Dalai Lama to Visit Seattle
Seeds of Compassion, an initiative to nurture
kindness and compassion in the world starting
with children, is bringing the Dalai Lama to
Seattle as part of an historic five-day event
April 11-15, 2008. In conjunction with the
gathering, Seeds of Compassion is talking to
educators about how guidance in compassion
helps children academically, socially, and
emotionally. Seeds of Compassion is inviting
Seattle Public Schools teachers and students
to participate in the three ways:
1) Learn more about the April 11-15 event (Children's Day is on April 14). 2) Take advantage of the Seeds of Compassion's Educator Resources. 3) Participate in the What Does Compassion Look LikeTM Campaign, a means for youth to explore what compassion is to them through drawings, photography, poetry, videos, spoken word - in whatever medium resonates for them.

Outstanding middle school students: this
scholarship is for you!
Each year, the Mayor and City of Seattle give
about 20 awards to "middle school students
who are responsible and generous community
members who give to society and lead by their
examples." Mayor's Scholars receive $500 to
contribute to the charity of their choice or
contribute to their future educational needs.
Many students selected come from communities
of color, are
living in poverty, and are from refugee and
immigrant communities.
As the fiscal administrator for the program and as part of the selection committee, we've become very impressed over the years with the Mayor's Scholars! Over the life of the program almost 70 percent of recipients have directed all or part of their $500 award toward furthering their education. To learn more and download application materials, visit the City of Seattle Office of Education Web site. Maple Elementary Update
We reported a while back about Boeing's
John D. Warner Academic Achievement Award of
$25,000 which went to Maple Elementary for
impressive academic advances at that school.
Armed with a long wish list from teachers and
staff, Principal Pat Hunter has used the
money for a variety of things enhancing the
education experience for students at Maple.
Read what Principal Hunter recently shared with us. Alliance for Education is an independent
nonprofit
organization that advocates for policies and
mobilizes resources that advance academic
achievement for all students in Seattle Public
Schools. Visit us on the Web at www.alliance4ed.org.
