At first glance, the walls of this school
room look like any other classroom in the
district. But differences appear as you look
more closely. A basket of electronic devices.
A computer with special equipment. And an
absence of desks in the center of the open room.
Room 204 of Lowell Elementary in Seattle Public Schools serves students with severe and profound disabilities. It is one of the three medically fragile special education classrooms in the district, providing support and teaching for eight non-verbal, physically disabled students from kindergarten through fifth grade. You might wonder how you would teach, let alone assess, students who cannot speak to you. But as special education teacher Katie Taylor has found, students can express themselves in a variety of ways. And this is where she begins -- giving her students a voice.

Schools for a Great City at Alliance for
Educations Fifth Annual Leadership Breakfast
for Kids! The breakfast is on May 1, 2007 at
the Seattle Sheraton. We are pleased to
welcome Dr. Mark Emmert, President of
University of Washington, as our keynote
speaker.

Graduating Seattle Public Schools seniors who
demonstrate financial need are invited to
apply for the Philip B. Swain Scholarship,
managed by Alliance for
Education. It is a $1,000 scholarship with
the potential for the selected recipient to
re-apply for additional $1,000 awards at the
end of freshman, sophomore, and junior years
of college.
The deadline for applications is May 23, 2007.

Ballard High School Students who are members
of EarthCorpan organization that provides
leadership and community experiences for
young peopleare helping to organize a
festival and dinner with community group
Sustainable Ballard. Called Eat Local
Now!,
the dinner will take place at the Ballard High
School Commons on April 17th from 6:00 pm to
9:00 pm.
