The Alliance for Education team extends our
deepest gratitude to the 660 guests who
attended our Fifth Annual Leadership
Breakfast for Kids on Tuesday, May
1. Guests were treated to a great keynote
presentation by Dr. Mark Emmert, president of
the University of Washington, a rousing
performance by the Hamilton Middle School
Marimba Band, and much more. Contributions
from the event totaled more than $285,000 to
support the work of the Alliance with Seattle
Public Schools.
We extend a heartfelt thanks to our table captains, corporate sponsors, event emcee Susan Hutchison and the many people who made the breakfast such a success. Acclaimed Writer Visits Sealth
On April 3, students and teachers from
Chief Sealth and Roosevelt High Schools were
treated to a unique opportunity. Author
Ishmael Beah, a New York Times best
selling
author, shared his story about growing up in
Sierra Leone and being forced to fight as a
child solider in the country's civil war. Mr.
Beah wrote about his life in the best-selling
book "A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier."

On May 10, Amgen is recognizing some of
Washington State's best science teachers with
the Amgen Award for Science Teaching
Excellence. At the awards dinner, Amgen will
recognize four
teachers for the ways in which they make
learning science an outstanding experience
for students.
Amgen has been an exceptional contributor to Seattle Public Schools by giving financial support to science programs and working with organizations across the city to help improve science education. But Amgen's dedication to science education in the U.S. extends well beyond the City of Seattle, to all of Washington and as far as Puerto Rico, where Amgen will also recognize outstanding science teachers. The Alliance's President and CEO Patrick D'Amelio will be the keynote speaker at the dinner. Alliance for Education is an independent nonprofit
organization that advocates for policies and
mobilizes resources that advance academic
achievement for all students in Seattle Public
Schools. Visit us on the Web at www.alliance4ed.org.
