The Alliance for Education's
Update to the Community

A letter from the CEO about the Update to the Community
Dear Friends and Partners of the Alliance for Education,
When I joined the Alliance for Education just over a year ago, it seemed like a natural time to review our strengths as an organization, the needs we fulfill, and how we can best serve the 45,000 students in Seattle Public Schools.
As part of this review, I spoke with hundreds of people from all corners of the city. We talked about what is working in our schools, as well as the challenges we face. I met with nonprofits serving Seattle Public Schools. I heard from parents about their hopes for their children. And, I listened to school district officials, School Board members, and independent education experts about how they felt the Alliance could best support Seattle Public Schools.
During our conversations, people asked me to clarify the work of the Alliance and our relationship with Seattle Public Schools. They asked me how the Alliance decides which academic initiatives to support. They asked about our role in closing the achievement gap and our commitment to serving students who need the most help.
This review lead to a strategic refocusing of the organization in which the Alliance’s board of directors, staff, and I sought to answer many of these questions. The outcomes of the strategic refocusing are presented in the Update to the Community posted on our Web site. I encourage you to read the update and to send us your feedback.
One outcome that I am particularly excited to announce is the creation of two new task forces, the Community Engagement Task Force and the Educational Investments Task Force. Composed of both board members and non-board members, these task forces will help guide our work as we move forward.
Thank you for supporting the Alliance and our mission to help every child in Seattle Public Schools achieve academic success. I hope to see you at our Community Breakfast on May 14!
Sincerely,
Patrick D’Amelio
President and CEO
