Ballard High School Principal Phil Brockman Receives
Foster Award for Outstanding Leadership
$50,000 Award to Benefit School

SEATTLE, WA April 9, 2009 – The Alliance for Education and Seattle Public Schools today announced that Ballard High School Principal Phil Brockman is the recipient of the Thomas B. Foster Award for Excellence for his outstanding leadership.

Ballard High School students and families joined representatives of the Alliance for Education and Seattle Public Schools to give Principal Brockman the award at Ballard this morning. Since the year 2000, Brockman is the seventh recipient to receive the award, which the Alliance gives to an exceptional secondary school principal. The award includes a $50,000 cash grant to the school.

Brockman is himself a graduate of Ballard and has been principal since the 2004-05 school year. He has served in Seattle Public Schools for 26 years, and was principal of West Seattle High School from 2000 to 2004. As principal of Ballard, Brockman has led the school in dramatic increases in student achievement. “Phil’s lifelong commitment to the students and families of Seattle Public Schools, and the exceptional growth in student achievement at Ballard, make him truly deserving of this award,” said Alliance for Education President and CEO Patrick D’Amelio

Superintendent Maria Goodloe-Johnson added, “Thousands of students over 26 years have been touched by Phil’s passion for education. And his commitment does not stop there. Time and again, he has answered the call to support the students and teachers of Seattle Public Schools.” During the 2006-2007 school year, Brockman served as interim high school director of the school district.

Tom Foster, founder of the law firm Foster Pepper and a Seattle civic leader, was deeply committed to helping the Seattle community and was passionate about education issues. When he passed away in 1999 at the age of 84, community members established a fund with the Alliance in his honor to recognize and support secondary school principals.
